Corporate Crime

Since a corporation is considered as a person in law I think it is definitely possible that they can commit murder.
I think corporations should definitely be responsible if people are dying because of their product. Nowadays we have thousands of rules and laws so why should we tolerate a corporation putting hundreds of thousands at risk.
It is not very easy to say, who should get charged if somebody dies because of a corporation.

I think it is very clear that the person who actually caused the dead of this person should be responsible for it. But that is not always very easy, because in a corporation, you do not always know who helped with the crime. It could be that the boss who runs the company does not even know that there is one of his employees who wants to harm customers. For example:

Mister X runs a company of several thousand workers, and he makes sweets. He has a few staff members that are responsible for the hiring of employees, and he has other employees that are responsible for training. He probably will never even meet many of those employees. Now suppose a small group decides to inject poison into the sweets, and as a result, children die, and hundreds more get sick. So who should get charged?? Mister X had no intent to commit a crime, he did not know of the crime, and he didn't even know the individuals who committed the crime.
I just think that it always depends on the different situations who should get charged and that you can not say that always this one person (e.g. the shop manager) should be responsible.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_Tylenol_murders

This article is about seven poeple who died after taking pain-relief capsules that had been poisoned in 1982 in the USA.The case remains unsolved and no suspects have been charged. A $100,000 reward, offered by Johnson&Johnson for the capture and conviction of the "Tylenol Killer," has never been claimed.

I think that just shows that we have to do something and change the law, because otherwise companies will just carry on with harming people, environment etc.

Drugs/Prostitution/Pornography (to be continued)

1.In my opinion drugs should not be legalized, because I think that it is just too dangerous. I think that, if the government would legalize them, people would start taking more and more of those and I think that there are already enough people killing themselves with drugs. I know that there are many people saying that there is a big difference between drug use and drug abuse. Although they are right, I think that if it would be legal to consume drugs more and more people would stop taking them once in a while and start taking them every day. This could be very dangerous, because there are many drugs , you could get addicted to after only one single fix. About the big discussion about the legalization of marijuana, I can only say that I think that it would not make a big difference if it would be legalized, because there are already enough people who do not care and consume it anyway. And in my opinion I think that it does not matter if we are talking about a chemical drug or a “nature product” because drugs are drugs and are simply bad for you.

2.Does pornography lead to violence? This may sound stupid, but I think that it depends on which porn you watch. I think that it is definitely not harmful if you know that pornography is just a simple fantasy. But I also think that it is possible that pornography leads to violence if they contain violence, aggression , brutality etc. If somebody does not see the line between fantasy and reality and wants to act the things he has seen on the porn , out it could harm or kill the person he is “using”.
In addition , I want to say that there is a big difference between different kinds of pornography.
I think that, if a adult couple love each other and want to make a video , and want to show that to the whole world, they should do whatever they want . But if a 30 year old guy has sex with a under 18 year old girl it is definitely WRONG ,and even worse if he makes a film about it and that is definitely harmful to the child (or teenager).

3.In my opinion a few forms of prostitution should be legalized, because I think that the rate of illegal prostitution would definitely go down.
I think that street walkers should not be legalized, because most of them are poor, drug addicts and just simply need help, instead of supporting them having more and more problems. It does not mean that streetwalkers would be free just because it would be legal to purchase it. It only means that their pimps get more money and that people do not have to look away when they see them on the street.
But I also think that prostitutes , who really want to have sex, and who want to get a lot of money, should get the chance to do that, legally.
I think when prostitution would be legal, that there would be less illnesses because those girls could just go to a doctor without any problems.
I think we have to accept that prostitution is a part of our society and that it will happen, legal or illegal.
So we should just make it legal and to a "real" profession, so we could have control over it and can help those who need it.

Marc Lépine and Clifford Robert Olson Jr

Marc Lépine (mass murder):
Since his teen years, he had been sullen and angry –Canadian. His mother had divorced his father over the issue of abuse, and Marc Lépine always got beaten by his father.
The boy so hated him that when he was 13, he changed his name to Marc Lépine.
Nevertheless Lépine adopted his father's views about women as servile and second-class. They were not men's equals. In his mind, women had a specific place in society and they should stay there.
As he grew older, he believed that independent women were pushing him out of his own rightful opportunities. Someone, he believed, had to teach them a lesson and he decided that it would be him.
Marc Lépine (on December 6, 1989) "You're all a of bunch of feminists! And I hate feminists!"

Monique Lépine (Marc Lépine’s mother): "He was a brutal man, who did not seem to have any control over his emotions... It was always a physical gesture, a violent gesture, and always right in the face."
On December 6, 1989, Marc Lépine went into the École Polytechnique at the University of Montreal, located on the north slope of Mont Royal. It was the largest engineering school in Canada, with about 5,000 students enrolled at that time. He ran through the whole school, shooting a rifle at women and people who where in his way. In the end, he turned the rifle's barrel toward his own face, pressed the muzzle against his forehead, and pulled the trigger.
All in all he had killed 14 women and wounded 13 other students of both genders.
It took a while to piece together why he had caused so much slaughter, but soon came out that he was an anti-feminist. He had wanted to shoot only women.

Clifford Robert Olson Jr (serial killer):
Clifford Robert Olson Jr born on January 1st, 1940 in Vancouver, B.C., is a canadian serial killer. In his teenage years, he did crimes like B&E's, robberies, theft, etc.
In 1974 he sexually attacked a 17-year-old fellow inmate. After being released he indecently assaulted a 7-year-old girl in Nova Scotia. This was the beginning of his sexually deviant and murderous criminal activities.
Olson had killed 10 children in southern British Columbia and, by the time he was finished, 11 would be dead. When he was arrested, only three bodies had been discovered and identified. The police did not yet know how many children had been murdered.
Olson said he wanted to be hired at a salary of $3,000 a month. In exchange, he claimed he would provide information about the disappearances.

Mass murders are the act of murdering a large number of people at the same time while serial killers are person who murder three or more people over a long period of time.
One big difference between serial killers and mass murderer is,that mass murders think that they have to accomplish a mission, and have to do it, while serial killers enjoy (sexual) assaulting, killing etc. people.
Marc Lépine did not feel pleasure by killing all these women but, Clifford Olson certainly did.

I do not think that we could ever stop people like this, because sometimes you do not even know that people are mentally oder emotionally disturbed and need help.
When you find out that somebody is a serial/mass murderer it's mostly already too late.
Another problem is that serial killers are mostly very smart people, and so it is hard too catch them.
But I also think that it is possible to stop some of those killers, if you keep your eyes open and
immediately call the police if you see people who announce murders. (e.g. videos via internet)

hypermasculinity/male socialization/sexual assault

Sexual behaviour could be socialized in males because most of the things we learn, learn we from peers, parents, school and media. When we are younger, girls are tought to be nice and friendly while boys are tought to be tough and brave. Girls should stay inside the house, playing with their dolls and their princess dresses while boys are outside fighting and playing in mud.Boys are tought to be strong, agressive and not supposed to show their soft side but they don´t get tought to rape a woman.

There are still a lot of families who learn their boys to treat girls with respect and try to teach them how to be a real gentleman.I think the major problem is media; Nowadays most of the TV shows and series are about sex, violence or people getting hurt by themselves because that are the things people are interested in.Kids are watching a woman on TV,who uses her body to get what she wants and so they think it is the right thing to do. They do not know that this is just entertainment and not "the real life".

When they get older men expect women to behave in exactly the same way and if they do not, they make them doing it (even if they have to rape them). In my opinion males who commit sexual assault are "hypermasculine" because they crave sexual control. They are aggressive and care only for their own needs.

This story is about a 24- year old man who who raped a 23-year old woman at knifepoint in a vehicle in Winnipeg’s North End early Monday 26th of May 2010.
The woman told police she willingly got into the suspect’s vehicle after some form of conversation but he soon made demands of sexual nature.
She declined and made it very clear she wanted out of the vehicle and made attempts to get out of the vehicle but Jason Michalyshen, who commited the crime, took out a knife and sexual assaulted her.
Altough the area is known being frequented by sex-trade workers, I don’t think that Michalyshen tought that he woman was a prostitute and it was okay to have sex with her.
When he got cought, he told a judge an addiction to steroids and alcohol abuse motivated the crime spree.
I don’t think that he raped the woman just because he consumed alcohol before he comitted the crime.
He probably just consumed alcohol to justify his behavior afterwards.

I think the reason why he comitted the crime was, because he really wanted sex, and after she made clear that she wanted out of the vehicle he didn’t see an other way to make her doing it.

Car theft in Canada

People steal cars for a few different reasons. Most auto thefts are crimes of opportunity because they were unlocked, keys were left in it or the engine was running. Organized theft rings exist to get cheap parts for hard-to-find or for very popular models. They steal them and sell them or the parts.Another reason why people steal cars is adrenaline. Many people steal for the thrill of trying not to get caught. Some other people steal cars because they do not have anything else to do, or because they want a free ride. Many poor people steal cars because they do not see any other way out of their situation in life.
In 1998, more than 165,000 vehicles were stolen in Canada, for an average rate of 452 a day! Canada's three largest provinces, Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia, account for more than 75% of all cars stolen in Canada, while Canada's three largest cities, Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, accounted for over 42% of all vehicle thefts in 1998.

The following is a list of cities in Canada with the highest rates of car theft per 100,000 population (Statistics Canada, 2007):
Winnipeg, MB 1,932
Abbotsford, BC 1,155
Edmonton, AB 1,076
Regina, SK 1,008
Vancouver, BC 745
Montreal, QC 646
London, ON 641
Calgary, AB 611
Saskatoon, SK 582
Hamilton, ON 503

The most commonly stolen vehicles:1. 2000 Honda Civic SiR

2. 2003 Cadillac Escalade ESV
3. 1999 Honda Civic SiR
4. 2006 Chevrolet/GMC Trailblazer SS
5. 2002 Cadillac Escalade EXT
6. 2005 Cadillac Escalade ESV
7. 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder
8. 2000 Audi S4 Quattro

9. 2006 Hummer
10. 2005 Cadillac Escalade

One type of thief is just looking for a car that’s easy to steal, with no approved anti-theft electronic immobilizer, which can be used for transportation, stripped for parts or used to commit other crimes. The other type of thief goes after newer, expensive vehicles. Although these are harder to steal, rganized crime rings can make a strong profit by shipping them overseas, chopping them for parts, or changing their vehicle identification numbers and selling them tconsumers.

Tips to prevent your car from being stolen:
• NEVER leave your keys in the car
• If possible, it is always best to park your car beyond a gate or garage where it can be covered from roving eyes.
• Always have a copy of your vehicle registration and title at home somewhere secure. (The reason being, if your car is ever stolen, authorities will not have any clue what they are looking for if you can't provide any information about the license plate or other pertinent information).
• Never leave valuables in plain sight
• Always lock your doors and shut your windows
• NEVER leave your car running and unattended
• Always use a security system
• Have a tracker fitted so that your car can be traced if it is taken
•Never leave vehicle documents in your car as they could help a thief to sell it on
• Invest in a steering lock and use it every time you leave your car

short and long term impacts on victims of crime

There are two different kinds of impacts on victims, short term and long term.
Short term impacts are problems, which can be managed after a short while, for example:

burns
bites
strangulations
broken/injured bones
internal injuries
financial costs (theft or medical costs)

The other problems victims have, after a crime has been committed are long term impacts.
Victims of crime and their family and friends can go through a difficult
adjustment period after a crime has been committed.
Consequences from that could be that the victim cuts himself off from the outside world, loses relationships (boy/girlfriend, friends ),quits his job, speech disorders, Mental Health Problems, etc. .
The trauma that people experience after being victimized is not a sign of weakness.
It is a stress reaction to the loss of safety and security brought about by the crime.
Traumatic memories are stored in the form of vivid sensations and images that may
be fragmented and without context. When something happens in the present that
reminds you of the crime, you may have the same reactions (emotional or physical )you
had when it first happened.
Another long term consequence of being a victim is The Cycle of Abuse.
The Cycle of Abuse is a theory developed by Lenore Walker.
His theory is based on the idea that people who have been harmed, might become criminals themselves.

This article is about Andrew Kummer who killed 3 boys in a car crash, while he was driving drunk. In this case there are many victims.
The dead people do not really have short and long impacts after the crime. But how about their mothers? Apart from the dead kids, there are also the families and friends who are suffering.
I think the worst thing that could happen in life would be to lose a beloved person, like your own child or your best friend.

Law and order special victims unit:
This episode was about a young woman who got raped by a man.
Apart from her bruises and wounds, this woman really got mentally destroyed.
After the violation, she was very afraid and did not want to go out anymore.
She quit her job, broke up with her boyfriend and cut herself off from the outside world.
After 6 months, she was still wearing her runners while sleeping in her bed at night.
That shows that you still could have problems, even if the crime happened a long time ago.

There are many ways to help victims.
Talking with others about your experience and about your feelings can help avoid
having harmful long-term effects.Sometimes a good listener is the best therapy a victim can have.
Support groups have been established where victims can meet regularly to share experiences and find help. For some victims, medication prescribed along with therapy is the best combination to relieve the pain.
I think that there are times when family and friends do not know what to say or how to help. This is when you need to reach out and get professional help.
In my opinion, it is better to work through the experience, it does not matter how painful it is.
If you are a family member or a friend and want to help the victim, you should make sure
that the person gets enough sleep, eats properly ,avoids alcohol (and other drugs), and eventually gets involved in activities that will divert their attention from their suffering.
